My City

 Polonnaruwa

 A City That Breathes History

Polonnaruwa is a special city in Sri Lanka where history, culture and craftsmanship come together. This ancient kingdom is still a valuable heritage that attracts tourists from all over the world.

🏰 Historical significance

Polonnaruwa became famous as the second capital of Sri Lanka. Especially during the reign of King Parakramabahu the Great. During his reign, the country's agriculture, water systems and religious life developed greatly. His idea that "not a drop of rain should be wasted in the sea" is still famous today.

Parakrama Samudra – The wonder of a large water reservoir

A must-see place if you visit Polonnaruwa is the Parakrama Samudra. This is a large water tank created by King Parakramabahu. Even today, it plays an important role in the lives of the people by providing water for agriculture.

 Gal Viharaya

Gal Viharaya is a very famous attraction in Polonnaruwa. It houses four Buddha statues carved on a single rock. Their finish, serene facial features and detailing are worth seeing.

Other important places in Polonnaruwa include the Raja Maligawa (Polonnaruwa) and Rankoth Vehera. When you look at these, you can clearly understand how high the architecture and religious devotion of ancient Sri Lanka was. I live in a city that has many other historical places like the Medirigiriya Vatadageya, Dimbulagala, Somawathi Chaitya, Nisshankalatha Mandapaya.

🚴‍♀️ Travel experience

Cycling is very popular when traveling in Polonnaruwa. You get a unique experience of walking through history as you slowly move through the old ruins.

Polonnaruwa is not just a city.  It is a living heritage that combines history, culture and natural beauty. Anyone who comes to Sri Lanka would be missing out if they don't visit this place.

I consider myself lucky to have been born in this city.
